The villa’s interior was designed as a celebration of the dynamics of space, demonstrating how an amorphous, intangible space can be animated into palpable motion. The staircase for the “Villa at Pinnock Beach” was envisaged as another functional sculptural form. Conceived entirely in crisp white to create a blank canvas for the daylight from the skylight overhead, the shifting tones of the sun’s westerly aspect bathe the translucent glass block of its stairwell throughout the day. When dusk falls the staircase’s form retreats in an interplay of light and shadows, and the three-dimensional chandelier at its core becomes the protagonist as it sends shafts of light piercing through the swirling sculpture at night.
